For many years and still a little now horsey fantics have viewed the standardbred as a 'common racing horse who will never amount to anything outside of racing' and due to this many standardbreds are glue or pet food when they finish their racing career when they could have been having a wonderful life such as hacking, jumping, showing, treking, endurance, eventing, dressage, western, you name it, the standardbred can do it! Standardbreds are usually able jumpers, in fact several standardbreds reached heights such as 6'9"! The horse who has won the most Olympics was also a standardbred. :-) True, some standardbreds have a tendancy to pace but in a sport like treking or endurance the pace is good as it doesn't use much energy and is comfortable for the horse and rider. Gaited horses such as the Paso Fino or Rocky Mountain horse also pace but it is considered a joy, not a nuisance as the standardbred's pace is.
